Okay, let’s talk a little national championship ahead of this weekend’s NCAA Tournament games in Indianapolis.

Obviously, Michigan is a slight favorite, but I don’t know – we’ve seen this happen before. This kind of stuff can bite you. I’ve loved Arizona this entire tournament, but over the last three or four days, with it looking like their coach might be bouncing to UNC, you have to ask: who’s talking about that? The players, the team, the assistant coaches? I think that’s an advantage for Michigan.

Dan Hurley, on the other hand, his success speaks for itself. The guy’s a lunatic, in a good way. His whole family is. I saw him tell Urban Meyer, “we’re a bunch of nut cases.” I like nut cases. Maybe I’m a little bit of one too. I don’t think UConn is as good as they’ve been, and by a miracle, they’re somehow in this game. They were getting worked in that Duke game, and let’s face it, Duke hasn’t been that good in this tournament.

It would be an incredible story if Hurley wins three out of four, but I kind of think it’s Illinois’ time – and we get an all-Big Ten matchup in the National Championship in Illinois vs. Michigan.

The best value on the board – if you’re looking at this as a one-game situation – is Illinois. Last time they played UConn, they lost by 14, but they’re comfortable in this matchup. The amount of cross tape, the familiarity – Illinois has also seen Michigan a ton. This isn’t one of those one-off tournament games between teams from different conferences. There’s real familiarity here, even in this era of constant roster turnover.

So from a value standpoint, at around +450 to win the national championship, Illinois is not a crazy pick by any means. Their offense is elite and their coach is a stud – he’s got that chip on his shoulder, JUCO background, all that.

Everyone’s probably going to take Michigan, but I’ll be honest – even if I don’t love Illinois in a one-game scenario, those odds right now to win it all are very, very enticing.

3 & Out: John Middlekauff’s NCAA Tournament Semifinal Picks

Today, I want to pick my NCAA Tournament semifinal on Hard Rock Bet.

I already told you guys about the three teams I hammered. I took Kansas and St. John’s because I knew they were going to play each other, and whoever won that game was going to have a lot of momentum. Pitino didn’t just win that game – it was a walk-off. He calls the dude “Big Balls Bell.” He’s won national championships before. It’s going to be very difficult, but I’m taking St. John’s to make the semifinal.

I’ve also got to stick with my guy John Calipari, who I think is tailor-made for the NIL era. The reason Arkansas has a chance to not only make the semifinal this year but be a dominant team moving forward isn’t because of Nolan Richardson and Corliss Williamson in the ’90s – it’s because of Tyson Chicken and the NIL backing that program. It’s big time. So I’m going with the Johnnies and I’m going with Arkansas.

After Nebraska hits the game-winning layup, then the dude misses the half-court shot that was halfway down – I feel like that bounce, 10 times, goes in at least eight. Nebraska might just be a team of destiny. They had never won an NCAA Tournament game until this year, and now have a chance to make the semifinal. If you look at the bracket, I don’t think it’s impossible. This one’s a little more about heart than what I would typically bet on, but I’m taking Nebraska to make the semifinal.

And last but not least, give me Michigan. It feels like they’ve been there a lot over the last 15 years. They’re just flat out good.

I’m going with Arkansas, the Johnnies, Nebraska, and Michigan to be the last four teams standing in college basketball.

3 & Out: John Middlekauff’s Favorite NCAA Tournament Futures

I’m gambling on the NCAA Tournament.

And listen, I know what happened last season—four No. 1 seeds in the Final Four. Clean, predictable, chalk all the way through. But I don’t think that’s the new normal. Not even close.

If anything, NIL has changed the sport in a different way. The top 15–20 teams are absolutely loaded now. You’ve got a team like Kansas sitting as a four seed with a guy who, two months ago, people thought was a lock to go No. 1 overall. BYU’s a six seed with top-end NBA talent. Duke, obviously, is stacked.

So yeah, the top is stronger—but March is still March. Weird stuff happens.

Don’t Overreact to the Early Rounds

I saw a stat floating around: all the top four seeds are double-digit favorites in the opening round. That’s not always the case. Usually, you get a few tighter spreads, especially in those 4–13 matchups.

This year? Not really.

Which tells me Thursday and Friday might be a little chalky. And honestly, that’s fine. The tournament doesn’t really start cooking until the weekend anyway. Once we get to the Sweet 16, that’s when things tend to go completely off the rails.

The Game That Could Define the Region

One matchup I keep coming back to is Kansas vs. St. John’s.

You’ve got Bill Self on one side, Rick Pitino on the other—two guys who have won national titles, two guys who know exactly what this tournament demands. And St. John’s is no joke. They just handled UConn in a big way.

Whoever wins that game is walking into the next round—likely against Duke—with real momentum and real confidence.

And in this tournament, that matters.

You can get Kansas around 10-to-1 odds to win the region. St. John’s is in that same ballpark. I like both. I actually threw some money on National Title futures for both—I want exposure to whoever survives that game.

The Sleeper I Can’t Ignore: Arkansas

If you’re looking for a team that could blow up the bracket, it’s Arkansas.

You can get them around 50-to-1 to win it all and roughly 10-to-1 to win their region. That’s real value.

Now, the path isn’t easy. They could run into Wisconsin early, then potentially Arizona—a team that, talent-wise, is as good as anyone in the country.

But here’s my issue with Arizona: we’ve seen this movie before.

They’ve had great teams for years—decades, really—and they just don’t get it done in March. At some point, that becomes more than coincidence. There’s pressure there. Expectations. And they haven’t broken through.

Arkansas, on the other hand, is coming in hot. They just won the SEC Tournament, they’ve got a star who can take over games, and sometimes in March, that’s all it takes.

Every few years, you get a Steph Curry-type run—one guy who just catches fire and carries a team.

Arkansas has that kind of potential.

The Coach Cal Factor

Now, I get it—John Calipari hasn’t exactly crushed it in the tournament relative to expectations. He’s lost games he probably shouldn’t have.

But this year is different.

He’s not the favorite. He’s not the one carrying all the pressure. He gets to play the underdog—and that’s a dangerous spot for everyone else.

Because most people aren’t picking Arkansas to beat Arizona. That’s exactly why I like them.

How I’m Betting the Tourney

I’m not overcomplicating this. I’ve got money on:

Kansas and St. John’s – playing the winner of that matchup for both region and championship futures
Arkansas to win it all – an underdog with real upside

That’s the beauty of this tournament. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about finding leverage, identifying spots, and trusting the chaos. Because it’s coming. And when it does, I want to be on the right side of it.

3 & Out: John Middlekauff’s Best Bets for Super Bowl LX

Today we recorded with my main man Stuckey. We dove into all the different angles for Seahawks-Patriots.

On paper, this might not have been the sexiest thing if you said it back in August, but the way it played out makes it fascinating. Vrabel versus Macdonald. Sam Darnold’s redemption story. Drake Maye, is he injured or not, and can the second-year quarterback become a Super Bowl champion?

We’ve got a lot going on, and we’re diving into every angle of this game from a gambling perspective.

Middlekauff’s Super Bowl Pick: Seahawks -4.5

I like Seattle -4.5 a lot. The one thing that gives me pause is the coaching for New England, which is elite.

I think sometimes people look at Vrabel as just a big massive alpha, but he’s a lot smarter than he gets credit for. There are six or seven things he’s done as a head coach dating back to the Titans that most coaches wouldn’t do, and they get his team little edges. He knows the rule book. He knows time management and clock management. Those little edges matter in these games.

If you like Seattle, I would ride Darnold to win MVP, maybe some interception props on defense, maybe even a pick six. That’s the way I’m going.

Stuckey: Target Low Scoring, Tight Game

Stuckey likes the total here. He thinks this will be a lower-scoring game. Super Bowls historically start off really slow. It used to be, you could play under 10 or 10.5 in the first quarter and it would hit for years. Now everyone is aware, and the first quarter total is around 8.5.

Both teams trust their defenses. Drake Maye has had fumble issues. Sam Darnold has had turnover issues in the past. Can see both teams coming out, feeling the game out, and not wanting to make a mistake.

This feels like a field-position battle. Both defensive staffs will have really good game plans. If one team has to play from way behind, that’s when turnovers come into play, but early on, expect things to be tight and conservative.

Middlekauff’s Prop Bet: Pick Six +650

Hard Rock Bet has 1+ Interception Return TD at +650.

Both quarterbacks have shown they can turn it over. Drake Maye has had a bunch of turnovers this postseason. Darnold led the league during the season. You’ve got two defenses throwing curveballs left and right, especially early in the game.

If someone gets down, they’re going to have to force it. To me, that one’s tasty. I’m definitely taking it.

Stuckey All In On Hunter Henry Props

One of Stuckey’s favorite avenues in this game is betting on Hunter Henry props.

He played over catches, over receiving yards, and longest catch over 17.5 yards. Seattle, by design, is one of the worst defenses in the league against tight ends. They funnel throws to the tight end because they want to take away explosive plays and force you to drive the field.

Maye is going to be under pressure. That safety valve matters. There are going to be design throws for Henry. Seattle doesn’t blitz a ton, so you don’t need as much protection help, and Henry can get involved down the seam.

Middlekauff’s Anytime TD Pick: Kayshon Boutte +325

The Patriots are going to have to take shots. That’s how they’ve operated offensively. Drake Maye is a really good deep-ball thrower, and it clearly feels like Drake likes Boutte and the Patriots like him.

At +325, those are pretty good odds for a guy they’re going to target down the field. Whether it works or not remains to be seen, but Boutte is the most likely receiver to hit a chunk play or a touchdown.

He could have one or two big plays that end up in the end zone. If you’re betting a Patriots receiver, that’s the profile.

Stuckey: Seattle To Run Wild

This one’s way in the weeds, but Stuckey also likes Seattle over 4.5 players to have a rush attempt.

You’re getting Kenneth Walker. The backup Holani will get a carry. Darnold will have at least one, whether it’s a scramble or a kneel. You’re probably getting a receiver on an end-around. This is when teams get creative in the Super Bowl.

AJ Barner will be involved in sneaks. You don’t not use him in 3rd & 1 or 4th & 1 situations. That all adds up.

Stuckey’s Anytime TD Pick: AJ Barner +230

Because of that usage, AJ Barner anytime touchdown is a sneaky bet.

If they’re at the 1, Barner is going to have a chance. He’s also one of Darnold’s favorite red-zone targets in the passing game. The Patriots linebackers struggle to cover in space, and that shows up around the goal line.

If you’re looking for someone who isn’t obvious, Barner fits.

John Middlekauff’s Best Bets for NFL Divisional Round

This slate comes down to high-leverage moments, quarterback trust, and which coaching staffs can dictate how games are played. Some teams are clearly built to win ugly. Others need their quarterback to be the best player on the field. That contrast shows up repeatedly across the board this weekend. Let’s get into it.

Bills (-1) at Broncos

This game is priced exactly like what it is: a coin flip. The moneyline reflects that reality more than the spread. The central question is how real Denver actually is. Even giving the Broncos a pass for recent games, there are still major questions. Bo Nix has not proven anything at the NFL level and has been inconsistent throughout the season. When Denver stepped up in competition earlier in the year, they got worked, particularly in games where physicality mattered.

Denver’s defense is good, but it is not built like the truly dominant units. It is more speed-oriented than punishing, and when faced with teams that can lean on them, cracks have shown. Buffalo is not at full strength offensively, especially at wide receiver, but the entire bet here comes down to Josh Allen. Historically, in games decided by less than a field goal, betting Allen simply to win has been one of the most profitable angles in football.

Buffalo will not throw the ball all over the yard in this matchup. Denver plays man coverage, blitzes aggressively, and dares receivers to separate. That is not Buffalo’s strength right now. Instead, this becomes a ground-game and clock-control game. The Bills will lean on the run early, keep Allen from taking unnecessary hits, and let the game come to them.

Defensively, Buffalo will play heavy two-high looks to eliminate explosive plays. That forces Nix to string together long drives, something he has not shown he can consistently do. This sets up a lower-scoring, field-position battle where the Bills are comfortable waiting until the fourth quarter to let Allen decide it. That edge is enough. Give me Bills ML.

49ers (+7) at Seahawks

This is the coaching matchup of the weekend. Everything hinges on the chess match between Kyle Shanahan and Mike Macdonald. Seattle’s run defense is historically dominant. No one runs on them, and that reality shapes the entire game. San Francisco will not be able to lean on the ground game, especially without key personnel that normally drive their run success.

That puts the burden squarely on the quarterback. The question becomes whether San Francisco can move the ball through the air against a defense that disguises coverages as well as any unit in the league. Seattle thrives on confusing quarterbacks post-snap and forcing mistakes, not just winning up front.

For the 49ers to stay alive, they must avoid long, grinding Seattle drives that dominate time of possession. Even when those drives end in field goals, they suffocate the game and create immense pressure on the opposing offense. San Francisco needs to force punts, steal possessions, and likely use situational aggression such as fake punts or fourth-down decisions to tilt the game.

Seattle, on the other hand, is perfectly content to park the bus if their defense is controlling the game. If they get ahead and feel confident defensively, they will shorten the game and rely on their structure. San Francisco catching +7 makes sense because this game is far more likely to be decided by small margins than a blowout. I’ll take the points with San Francisco.

Texans (+3) at Patriots

This game is about defense carrying the load. Houston has a unit capable of dragging them to a Super Bowl regardless of offensive inconsistency. The pass rush, speed, and physicality are overwhelming when locked in, and New England’s offensive line has shown vulnerability against pressure.

The concern lies entirely with Houston’s quarterback play. Turnovers change everything here. If Stroud presses, tries to play hero ball, or forces throws, the door opens. The coaching staff’s job is to simplify things, lean on the run game when possible, and allow the defense to dictate terms.

New England’s résumé is difficult to evaluate because of the competition they faced throughout the season. When they stepped up in class against real defenses, the operation did not look nearly as smooth. This matchup represents another significant jump in defensive quality.

The Texans do not need offensive fireworks. They need clean football. If they protect the ball and avoid self-inflicted damage, their defense can dominate field position, create short fields, and potentially score themselves. That defensive edge tilts the game toward Houston. Texans +3 is the play.

Rams at Bears (+4)

The Bears continue to defy logic, and that is the entire case for taking the points. They can be down multiple scores and still find themselves in overtime an hour later. That magic has followed them all season, especially at home.

Defensively, Chicago struggles across the board. They do not generate pressure, they give up explosive runs, and they rely heavily on turnovers that are unlikely to sustain. That creates a favorable environment for the Rams, who can score in a variety of ways. Los Angeles should be able to run the ball, exploit linebacker depth, and create explosive plays through the air.

However, the Rams’ defense has quietly regressed. After dominating early in the season, they have slipped significantly in efficiency and have allowed far more explosive plays down the stretch. That opens the door for Chicago to keep pace, especially with continued offensive improvement and aggressive play-calling.

This game profiles as one with scoring on both sides. The Rams should move the ball consistently, but the Bears’ ability to answer and create chaos makes taking the points logical, even if it feels uncomfortable. I’m on the Bears +4.

John Middlekauff’s Best Bet for Texans vs Steelers

When looking at this Monday night game, where the Steelers have not lost in Pittsburgh in like 30+ years, I can only think of one thing: if this was a Disney movie, you would be like “Aaron Rodgers going to throw a bunch of touchdowns. The record on Monday Night Football is going to continue. It’s going to be awesome!”

But this is the NFL. This is not reality television. I know people think they script this – they don’t. And more than likely, this is not going to end well for the Steelers.

Why This Matchup Is a Problem

I was flipping through the channels this morning at the gym and Aidan Hutchinson was in the studio with the ESPN guys. He was talking about his experience playing against Rodgers and said, “it’s not really fun because he’s going to get rid of the ball so fast that however many plays you have on offense, let’s say 40 to 45, maybe less, you’re going to have two or three chances over that entire time to sack him.”

And when you get that opportunity, you just better not miss.

The thing is, these Texan guys don’t miss. Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson are just not going to miss. So if Pittsburgh gets in a position where they are down early, they would be in major trouble.

The Steelers Are Lucky to Be Here

Let’s face it, the Steelers are extremely lucky to be playing in this game. If John Harbaugh got a little more aggressive with 12 seconds left and a timeout, that field goal could have been closer.

It’s a tough place to kick, sure, but how often is Loop missing that kick? Less than 25% of the time.

So the Steelers are very, very fortunate to be here.

Defensive Concerns

Part of the reason they’re fortunate is because their defense isn’t that good. They’ve moved Jalen Ramsey to safety. He blew multiple plays in that game that cost them.

He is an all-time great player. Jalen in his prime was simply elite. His versatility, his size, his physicality as a tackler. I’m a big Jalen Ramsey fan , but at certain positions when you get old, you kind of fall off a cliff. He’s just not quite the same guy.

Their pass rush isn’t that great, either. Cam Heyward played the game of his life, which was awesome, but it was like watching John Randle in his prime. Can he do that again?

I just have a hard time seeing this go well for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Middlekauff’s Pick for Texans vs Steelers

I think it would be cool if the Steelers were to win this game. I would enjoy watching a throwback Rodgers game. It was awesome watching that fourth quarter against the Ravens. But I’m not betting on it. I’m actually betting against it.

I’m going to take the Houston Texans -3 in this game. I actually love the Texans in this game. I think they could smother them and absolutely destroy them.

Those runs that were going against the Ravens where Jaylen Warren was breaking tackles like he’s Walter Payton or Earl Campbell, I don’t envision that happening tonight.

You lose at home and all of a sudden it’s not looking great. It can get weird really quick. We’re not that far removed from them chanting “Fire Tomlin.”

I just think we’re seeing the end of it all. Give me Texans -3.

John Middlekauff’s Best Bets for CFP Semifinal & NFL Playoffs

This is always the time of year where you start getting a little bittersweet because you start counting how many games are left. For me personally, this probably one of the last weekends of pure football between the schedule and everything going on in my life.

Fifteen total games are left across the NFL and college football, with seven of them taking place this weekend. Let’s get into it.

Who Can Win the Super Bowl?

Here’s how I look at it. If you’re a 1 seed, you’ve just got to win two games. Both Seattle and Denver have slightly easier paths to the Super Bowl, and if they can get there, they can win it. That’s simple math.

After that, I’m not throwing the entire league into the “can win” bucket because people love doing that in January. You need a defense that isn’t a disaster, and you need an offense that can handle the heat. In the AFC, I had the Jags, Pats, Texans, and Bills as the teams outside the Broncos that can actually win it. In the NFC, besides Seattle, I only had two: the Rams and the Eagles. That’s eight total.

And I’m sorry – I can’t take teams seriously when their defense is as bad as the 49ers or Bears. People can scream at me, but you’re asking me to win three games just to get there, and then a fourth against the best team left standing. If your defense stinks, good luck.

Rams/Panthers Under 46

This number is massive. Laying 10.5 points on the road in the playoffs is ridiculous. It’s the kind of line where you have to ask: what exactly are we betting on?

The Rams and Panthers recently played in November, and Carolina won outright, but it was fluky. The Rams moved the ball, had a huge success rate, and still lost because of turnovers and high-leverage explosive plays – a pick six, bombs on fourth down, that kind of stuff that isn’t sustainable. The Panthers were also extremely short-handed defensively in that game.

Here’s my problem: I don’t want anything to do with 10.5 points. That’s just too big. But I can see a path to an under. The Panthers offense has a ceiling. Their rushing offense has been broken late in the year, and I like Bryce Young, but I can’t see him shredding this Rams defense. Are they going to hit a bunch of fourth-down bombs again? Maybe. But if we’re being real, the Panthers are more likely to be sitting around 10 points than they are to be sitting around 27.

So I’m looking at the under. Outdoor totals in the Wild Card round above 44 have pointed to the under historically, and when you’re staring at a game that I can see landing 28-10, 28-17, or 24-14, all those outcomes fit the same script. Rams advance unless it turns into a turnover fest.

Packers (-1) at Bears

I love this matchup. This rivalry matters again, and Chicago’s going to be on fire. First home playoff game since the double doink? That place is going to have a collegiate feel, and I get why people want to ride the emotion.

But I’m taking Green Bay. And a huge part of it is just trusting Jordan Love more than Caleb Williams right now. The Bears had a fluky year in a lot of ways, especially with turnovers and late-game magic. The Packers, meanwhile, basically gave themselves a bye in Week 18. If you watched that game, they did nothing – and I mean nothing. They were prepping for this game the entire week, and that matters.

The Bears defense can’t get pressure. If Love has a clean pocket, he’s shown he can carve you up. And the Packers can generate explosive plays, while Chicago’s defense gives them up. Now, I’m not pretending the Packers defense hasn’t fallen off with injuries – that matters too – and I do think the Bears will have some success running the ball. But in a playoff game, I’m siding with the quarterback who has been there.

Also, first playoff starts can get weird. There’s nerves, there’s jitters, and historically it hasn’t gone great when you’re a first-time playoff starter facing a guy with experience. That doesn’t mean Caleb can’t play well – it just means I’m not betting on it.

Bills (-1) at Jaguars

This is the one game where I’m holding my nose a little. Jacksonville is hot. They’re rolling. Team speed, physicality, quarterback confidence, defense flying around – they look like one of those teams you don’t want to see in January.

And still, I’m taking Josh Allen.

If Buffalo loses this game, it wouldn’t shock me, and I’ll bet on Jacksonville from then on out because they can absolutely win the Super Bowl. But if not now, then when for the Bills? No Lamar. No Mahomes. It’s wide open. This is the year where you can’t tell yourself, “We ran into the buzzsaw again.”

Also, Jacksonville doesn’t exactly have the kind of home-field advantage that makes you terrified the way Kansas City does. Buffalo has lived in these big playoff moments for years. They’ve lost a lot of them, but they’ve been there.

So give me the Bills. I don’t feel great about it. But I’m betting on the quarterback who can take over the game when it gets weird in the second half.

Chargers (+4) at Patriots

I’ll keep it simple: Harbaugh, Herbert, that defense – give me the points.

New England’s story is awesome, but they didn’t exactly face a gauntlet all season. And from a pass rush standpoint, they’re not rolling out a group that scares you. The Chargers have a mentality, and Harbaugh teams are built to play in these moments.

Herbert also has something to prove. That playoff game last year was ugly. This is where you respond. I’m not picking them to win the Super Bowl, but I think they are an extremely live underdog on the road catching more than a field goal.

Texans at Steelers (-3)

He’d been out of the league for over a decade learning different sides of the operation before he took over in Denver. Playing and being an executive are dramatically different jobs.

Look at guys like Mike Vrabel or DeMeco Ryans. They didn’t just show up and get handed power. They started at the bottom and learned the craft.

As a personnel executive, Matt Ryan would suddenly be dealing with agents, cap structures, draft boards, free agency values — things he’s never done. There’s a huge difference between breaking down a defense and setting a draft board. Between negotiating your own contract and being on the other end of that phone call saying, “No, we’re not paying that.”

The key, if Matt Ryan ever did this, would be hiring elite people immediately. Your right-hand guy becomes your pseudo-GM. John Elway had that. John Lynch had that. I respect anyone who’s made an ungodly amount of money and still wants to dive into that fire. Because there are no off days. There’s no work-life balance. That stuff doesn’t exist in the NFL, especially for executives.

But if you’re going to do it, you better be 10 toes down, all in, and surrounded by people who know exactly what they’re doing.

And honestly, could it go worse than what the Falcons have been doing? Probably not. That’s what makes it fascinating.

So yeah — I like the Falcons +7.5 on Monday night, because things could get weird. And long-term? The Matt Ryan angle is one of the most interesting storylines this franchise has had in a while.
